Neat Video Pick of the Day

I've had fun playing with cornstarch + water mixtures before, but in this video, someone is applying vibrations to that mixture with really interesting results. See the end of the clip, especially.

Oh WOW!!!
I think I've seen that last bit in a Star Trek Next Generation episode when the doctor's hand mysteriously gets cloned and grows from some goop in a dish.

To think that until now I've been content just to squish the stuff in my hand to make it temporarily solidify when what I really needed was a Faraday wave generator.

I wonder how the wave patterns would be affected by changing the shape of the container, using angular faces instead of a round petri dish.

Have you read Solaris? They don't really show it as much in either of the movies as they describe it in the books, but my first thought about that last bit was, "Hey! It's Solaris!" The surface of the planet is like an ocean that suddenly bursts out and forms these massive "land" forms that just grow and mutate out of the surface. Very cool!

I haven't read it, but I know I ought to. If you recommend it, I shall move it to the top of my list!
